Forsberg Notches Fourth Win But Sylvia Steals Night

Jake’s Performance Hobbies Night saw a great crowd, hooked up track surface and extra money on the line as it was also round #2 of the Pit Stop USA Shootout Series. The winged 360 class saw Scott’s Valley’s Evan Suggs top the qualification charts with steady 12.636 effort to best the 14-car field. Bradley Terrell and Dave Lindt Jr. were the 8-lap heat race winners. The 25-lap, $2,000 to win feature saw Suggs, wheeling the Vonschriltz #121, nab the early lead over Andy Forsberg. Aaron Miller and Bradley Terrell both stalled on lap two with Terrell retiring after a hard bicycling. The leaders entered lap traffic on the 7th circuit as Jake Haulot was on the move to fourth. Lap 11 saw a red flag for Marissa Polizzi as she tagged the turn one fence hard. On the ensuing restart Haulot augured around Lindt Jr. for third. Mid-race it was still Forsberg chasing Suggs by a dozen car lengths as now Herman Klein accelerated his pace. On the 22nd lap as the lead duo negotiated traffic it was Forsberg with a nifty pass as Suggs was caught in a moment of indecision. Ironically, this was an almost exact duplicate of a maneuver Suggs put on Forsberg back on May 2nd. Holding on for his 4th Petaluma win of the season was Forsberg over Suggs, Haulot, Klein, and Zack Lynskey.
The Pit Stop USA Spec Sprints saw 14 open wheelers log times in group qualifying with Jimmy Christian emerging with the fastest trip around the Adobe at 14.773. Christian and Terry Schank Jr. copped the pair of preliminary heats. Youngsters Cody Fendley and Shayna Sylvia led the field to the green with Fendley establishing his skills to lead the first nine laps. On the 10th lap it was Sylvia with a deft low side pass entering turn one as Fendley was forced to tap the binders to avoid hitting a slower competitor. Christian began a methodical march at this point getting by point leader Klint Simpson first and then Schank. Lap 15 it was still Sylvia leading the way as Christian passed Nick DeCarlo for third. The first caution came on lap 23 as Sylvia’s nice lead was erased. The restart saw Christian gamble and spin alone in turn four. The final lap was all Sylvia as she brought home the family run #9 for her first sprint car win. The very popular victory was the first for a female competitor in a wingless sprint car at Petaluma Speedway. Fendley with a strong effort was second, over DeCarlo, Simpson, and Schank.
The Lumberjack Restaurant Super Stocks saw Danny Naron and Matt While earn heat race victories. Veteran Woody Woodward after several years away from racing looked strong as he led the 25-lap finale. Defending track Champion Brent Blackwood moved into third by the 4th lap and challenged Woodward as the two rubbed and exchanged pieces of sheet metal in a crowd pleasing display of determined racing. As the lead pair preoccupied themselves with each other they overlooked young Trevor Brady as he split between the two leaders mid-race and stepped away from the field to earn his second career win. Woodward, Steve Studebaker, Blackwood, and Michael Drew rounded out the top five.
The Larsen Racing Products Dwarfs returned to action after a seven week layoff. Danny Marsh and Dave Mosier won the pair of heat races. The 14-car field streaked to the green with Carroll Mendenhall in the lead. Buddy Olshowka took the lead on the second stanza, as the front five places were very congested. Visiting Danny Wagner got by Olshowka a lap later and reached for top gear as he was constantly stalked by Mosier. John Peters was up to third by lap 10 from his 7th starting position. At the 20-lap Scott Erwin checkers it was a surprising yet confident Wagner the victor over Mosier. Peters was third over Olshowka and Mendenhall.
Bullet Bob Davis continued his streak of mini stock heat race wins in the Jake’s Performance Hobbies sponsored class. The 20-lap feature early on saw Snazzy Duckworth looking competitive over Eden McCormick and Zack Albers. Former track champion Pete Langley making his first start of the season was the winner over a nice effort from Duckworth, Tom Curley, Albers, and McCormick.
Petaluma Speedway returns to action Saturday Night, August 8th featuring the 4th Annual Sores Classic featuring a 50-lap Joe Hunt Wingless Sprints vs Pit Stop USA Spec Sprints.
